Kendrick Meek, Bill McCollum Hold Leads Going into Florida's Tuesday Primary
The primary battles for Florida's GOP gubernatorial nomination and the Democratic nod for senator will be settled by voters on Tuesday, and the latest poll shows that the trends continue in favor of the two candidates who were the initial frontrunners before wealthy challengers shook up the races.
Four-term Rep. Kendrick Meek leads billionaire Jeff Greene in the race for the Democratic senate nomination by 42 percent to 30 percent with 25 percent undecided, and another 5 percent scattered over other responses, according to a Mason-Dixon Research poll conducted Aug. 17-19 for the Tampa Tribune and other Florida news outlets.
State Attorney General Bill McCollum, a former ten term congressman now running in his fourth statewide race, leads former health care executive Rick Scott by 45 percent to 36 percent with 15 percent undecided and 4 percent choosing other responses.
The margin of error for both is 4.5 points.
the latest poll points in the same direction as a Quinnipiac University survey conducted Aug. 11-16, which found Meek and McCollum regaining their footing after being knocked out of the leads in their races but the well-funded campaigns of Greene and Scott.
But while Scott is still the spending leader, having poured $38.9 million of his own money into the race, McCollum has been able to rebound with a big infusion of corporate and "high-powered Republican Party backers" who have come through with contributions, according to the Tribune.
The Tribune says Green has so far spent $23 million while Meek's campaign had raised $7 million through Aug. 4
